Wedding Cake Advice

Pictures are great, but our experience dictates that a well done picture can mislead you. That's why we have a large display of artificial cakes.

Seeing the actual wedding cake makes it much easier to determine the cake style that appeals to you.

Listen to the advice of the bakery sales people as to what would look good. Try to keep strong colours such as black to a minimum on an edible cake. Food colours at times do impart a flavour and it can be embarrassing to have your guests sporting discoloured lips that match your wedding colours.

A good choice is to accentuate your wedding colours using variegated roses and fine lacy trim (if you desire cream decorations) or using fresh flowers to compliment your colours.

When To Order
You should order your wedding cake approximately 2 - 3 months prior to the wedding,. It is one of the last details in organising your wedding celebrations. This is when you will have confirmed your colours, the number of guests you expect, and the type of reception and catering you prefer.

Renting a Cake
Renting a three tier wedding cake will cost $79.00, much less than a custom decorated cake. This wedding cake is made to look real but of course cannot be eaten.

If you decide to rent a cake, provision will be made for a cutting wedge, this means that you can cut the cake for the photo opportunity.  Afterwards you should have the caterers remove the cake for the appearance of being real and serve the pieces of cake that you purchased for dessert; ususally a cutting slab.  Your caterer will appreciate this choice. They can cut the cake in advance and be ready to serve right after the meal.

There is no reason why your guests need to know that you rented a cake.

Some Options
Another budget pleasing suggestion would be to order a single tier cake decorated for a wedding.  This could be in the shape of an open book or perhaps double hearts.

There are many options and these cakes do make a beautiful presentation.  This solution is the most economical of all and still gives you a dessert serving for the reception.

Today our decorators use some interesting techniques to give the wedding cake a new more modern appeal.

The most popular cake is the Rolled Fondant wedding cake.
This style of cake has the smooth finish that allows very detailed decorating to produce a very simple but elegant look while underneath is a delicious European Buttercream Cake.

Or be different, perhaps you would prefer a Carrot Cake.
Rolled fondant cakes are a new decorating trend.  For those brides and grooms who favour a lighter cake, a chocolate mousse might be more to your liking or perhaps strawberry mousse would be more seasonal.  These cakes are limited in decorating styles due to their soft texture (whipping cream is their main ingredient) but we do decorate these cakes very attractively.

Royal icing is the hard icing used to decorate fruitcakes. It works well when cakes can not be refrigerated.  It's eating qualities are considered somewhat marginal but decorators can do an outstanding job of designing your cake.  This type of cake can be purchased well in advance.
